Yoga for CrossFit



Yoga for CrossFit is this Sunday 13:30-14:45!

Last year's Yoga for CrossFit Workshop with Liz was a massive success! So much so, we've added a new class to the schedule on the first Sunday of each month.

Liz, herself a CrossFitter,  has deivsed a Yoga Workshop where you will learn the best yoga poses and movements to enhance your range of motion, strength and stability. This class will be ideal for you if you struggle with your mobility or find it difficult getting into certain positions in the gym!

The class is available to all members including Elements. The class is available for booking in Wodify NOW! If you don't see the class on your app, please make sure you select the new program: Yoga for CrossFit.

How is the challenge run?

A partnership between Sleven CrossFit and pH Nutrition. We have designed a 30 day challenge that you can sign up to regardless of your goal. We will provide a nutrition guide, calories, macros, meal breakdowns, sample meal plans, recipes, and most importantly education over the month. 

This is not a super low carb or a ridiculous juice fast.....it is about educating you on how to get your nutrition plan in place to see results but build solid habits.



How Do I Sign-Up?

All you have to do is click on the button below!

On the 1st February you will get access to the nutrition guide, macro calculator and challenge resources. You will also get access to Wodify Rise and details of how to track your food on MyFitnessPal. Both Wodify Rise and MyFitnessPal are free.

Calculate your calories and macros. Start to track your food and follow your guide.

Check off the daily and weekly tasks to help build habits and keep you accountable.

What do I actually get?

We deliver a step by step guide through our app with regular content, links and downloads. You receive a nutrition guide, 3 recipe packs and tracking guide, alongside a ton of other resources to help guide you through the challenge. 

We will hold regular Q&A’s to help you crush the challenge.
 

Should I sign up for fat loss or strength?

This is about identifying what your limiting factor is. If you feel that strength is preventing you from making progress in areas such as gymnastics or barbell movements, then strength is the way forward. It is not a “bulk”...don’t worry. It is more about fuelling your training better.

If you want to lean out, drop excess body fat, without having your energy levels nosedive then fat loss is the program for you!

What foods do I have to remove?

No food is “bad” or “good”. We have provided you with a priority food list. If you focus on building your nutrition plan around these foods, you will make progress and feel healthier. The more you eat from the limit table the harder it will be. We will provide you with a food table which we have categorised into anytime foods, training foods and foods to limit.  
 

So this is not low carb?

No, this is not low carb. It is more "controlled" carb. We want to eat our carbs at the right times to support our energy and training performance. 



What if I do not want to track my food?

The challenge is about finding a pattern of eating that works for you. You can use the hand portion control guide if you like. You do not have to track, nor do you have to follow the exact meal structure. But if you do, you will make faster progress. It is a challenge, some parts are not meant to be easy!
 

Can I do it if I am a vegetarian/vegan?

Yes, absolutely! The principles are exactly the same and the macro calculator will provide you with guidance on how to change your macros.
 

Do I have to follow the meal structure?

Yes and no!

Let us explain:

One of the biggest areas we see with members is lack of structure. This leads to either mindless snacking as you haven't planned when the next meal is, or you haven't eaten enough so you are hungry. Regular patterns of eating are crucial for fat loss and strength gains.

The meal structure is set as a guide, not a rulebook. Over the course of the challenge, we encourage you to personalise it so it fits your lifestyle.



Do I have to weigh myself?

We are going to ask you to use the RENPHO scales at the gym. You will weigh in at the start and the end. However, you can weigh yourself as much as you want throughout! These are the most accurate scales and provide a consistent measurement. 

How do I win?

Liam, Tom, Nick and Tim will collate body composition data alongside before and after pictures to decide on the best transformation for fat loss and strength. We will also have a spirit of the challenge award.

Support Australia Fundraiser



The world has been watching aghast at the terrible bush fires raging in Australia this past month. No more than Coach Loren whose family and friends are directly affected by this terrible tragedy. In an attempt to help, Sleven will be running a charity fundraiser on Sunday 26th January at 11:00, which is also Australia Day.

The class is available for booking on Wodify NOW! The class is available to all members and friends of Sleven so bring your family, partners, friends and animal companions down to the box!

The Support Australia Fundraiser is free to attend (it won't count against your class packs) but we'll be asking all attendees to please donate a minimum £10 to the below Just Giving page in support of the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army in Australia has been on hand providing immediate practical assistance and emotional support to people fleeing their homes from the devastating bushfires as well as supporting firefighters in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, which are the hardest hit states.

If you donated to the bank account we put up last week, we have transferred the donation to the Just Giving account.

The WOD

The workout incorporates a version of some of the movements performed by firefighters during their training and testing and the number 40 is the highest national average temperature recorded in December.
 

AMRAP 40 Mins

Teams of 4

One pair works while the other pair rest and you can change at any time. One team member must be wearing a weight vest at all times and you can change at any time.

40 DB box step-ups (partner performs deadlift hold)
40 Burpee over bar (partner performs overhead DB hold) 
40 DB single arm overhead lunges (partner performs a plank hold)
40 DB thrusters (partner performs dead hang on rig)

*Every 8 mins
400m odd object carry as a team with the option of changing between you at any time on the run.

After the holiday period, nutrition is at the forefront of most of our minds.  To get the ball rolling, we are holding a nutrition seminar this Saturday, 18th January at 13:00 after Strength and this is free to all members and friends of Sleven! 

There are several purposes for the seminar. Firstly, it's a chance for us to introduce you to Liam and why we chose pH Nutrition. We will also be introducing you to Tom McClure, who will be our on-site nutrition coach. Importantly, Tom is a CrossFitter and you'll soon see him working out alongside you! He is highly experienced working in the industry as a Personal Trainer, CrossFit Coach and now a qualified Sport Nutritionist. Tom has provided nutrition coaching for a range of athletes, including members of Team GB Special Olympics squad, Colchester United FC, Northampton Saints Rugby Academy and Saracens Rugby Academy players.



Secondly, it's an opportunity for us to answer any questions you may have regarding nutrition. Topics we'll be covering include:

  • Principles of nutrition for CrossFit
  • Timing of nutrition around training
  • Practical advice for fat loss and muscle gain
  • Nutrition for weightlifting, endurance and gymnastics
  • How to fuel before, during and after competitions
  •  How to implement veganism into your diet while doing CrossFit

Sleven would like to thank everyone who attended our XMAS EXTRAVAGANZA! We had a fantastic time and hope your heads weren't too sore on Sunday morning. The day started with our world famous "12 Days of Christmas" WOD before heading over to the Blues Kitchen in Shoreditch for a delicious lunch and later the Queen's Head for shenanigans and merriment!

One for Sleven's ladies! If you enjoyed the SLEVEN STRENGTH SPECIAL with Sarah, you'll have another opportunity to benefit from her coaching at the Strong Girls Club on Sunday 12 January.  This is an afternoon of lifting and learning at Sleven with a group of other strong girls. You'll get getting coaching from Sarah on your lifts, technique and training.

Sarah will be joined by Linn Mayhew. Both Sarah and Linn compete internationally at Masters level, and have competed at English National level. Linn is a BWL 1 Coach who has medalled at several international competitions, Sarah is a BWL 2 Coach and Technical Official. Both have a wealth of experience of coaching all levels of weighlifter.

On the day, you'll spend three hours learning and practising some specific exercises for the Snatch and Clean & Jerk, as well as covering some of the theory behind the lifts. You'll then receive specific, individual coaching on your own lifts from Sarah and Linn, in a relaxed and supportive environment. 

The workshop will cover some common problems with both lifts, and how to solve those using specific drills. You'll also get to practise exercises to help with anything that’s holding you back in your lifting, so you’ll have your own exercises and drills to take away and work on after the workshop.

The workshop is suitable for all levels, whether you are a CrossFitter, a weightlifter or simply curious to give weighlifting a go. This event is open to the public so if you have a friend who you think would like to join you, send them a link to get booking.

We love that there are so many strong girls getting into lifting, and we’re excited about holding the Strong Girls Club at Sleven!

Meet Liam



pH Nutrition's founder, Liam Holmes has worked in elite sport for over 12 years, with time spent at Tottenham Hotspur, Republic of Ireland, Fulham FC and FC Copenhagen. He currently coaches CrossFit Games athletes Jamie Greene and Elliot Simmonds and has built a team of 6 nutritionists who are here to help you with any of your nutrition issues.


“My philosophy is one of an individualised approach to nutrition. I built pH Nutrition on providing a service that simplifies nutrition, cuts through the confusion and provides something that is sustainable. There is plenty to look forward to in 2020 with our new exciting partnership. We will be hosting a nutrition seminar on the 18th of January and kicking off our first nutrition challenge in February!

SLEVEN XMAS Extravaganza



Remember, the venue has changed for the Christmas meal! We will now be luncheoning at the Blues Kitchen Shoreditch before getting Uber'd at no extra cost to you, to our original venue, The Old Queen's Head.

If you didn't buy a ticket for the party but would like to come for a drink(s), you're more than welcome to come after 18:00 and join in on the festivities at our original venue, The Old Queen's Head. If you'd like to come earlier, please feel free to come for the year in review and awards ceremony from 16:30 at the Blues Kitchen Shoreditch.

Please note, all classes have been cancelled on the 15th of December. Being the day after the Xmas party and a long week of testing, we've decided to give both athletes and coaches a well earned break!



We're excited to introduce MetCon Burn, our new 45 minute fat torching, heart exploding class to the schedule. The class will start on Monday, 6th of January at 12:00 and will run weekdays allowing you to pop out and get back to your desk before your boss even notices!

Yoga for CrossFit



The Yoga for CrossFit Workshop was a big success! Liz took over 20 members through many poses and flows and everyone left feeling relaxed and flexy!

We will be looking to expand our offering with this style of class in 2020 so watch this space!

Do you struggle with mobility? Does it hold you back from fulfilling your potential? Liz Marsland is a L2 CrossFit Coach, physiotherapist and qualified yoga instructor and is available for personal training at Sleven. An athlete herself, she understands the requirements, mentally and physically, of being a successful and injury-free athlete. Liz is available at the following times:

One for Sleven's ladies! If you enjoyed the SLEVEN STRENGTH SPECIAL with Sarah, you'll have another opportunity to benefit from her coaching at the Strong Girls Club on Sunday 12 January.  This is an afternoon of lifting and learning at Sleven with a group of other strong girls. You'll get getting coaching from Sarah on your lifts, technique and training.

Sarah will be joined by Linn Mayhew. Both Sarah and Linn compete internationally at Masters level, and have competed at English National level. Linn is a BWL 1 Coach who has medalled at several international competitions, Sarah is a BWL 2 Coach and Technical Official. Both have a wealth of experience of coaching all levels of weighlifter.

On the day, you'll spend three hours learning and practising some specific exercises for the Snatch and Clean & Jerk, as well as covering some of the theory behind the lifts. You'll then receive specific, individual coaching on your own lifts from Sarah and Linn, in a relaxed and supportive environment. 

The workshop will cover some common problems with both lifts, and how to solve those using specific drills. You'll also get to practise exercises to help with anything that’s holding you back in your lifting, so you’ll have your own exercises and drills to take away and work on after the workshop.

The workshop is suitable for all levels, whether you are a CrossFitter, a weightlifter or simply curious to give weighlifting a go. This event is open to the public so if you have a friend who you think would like to join you, send them a link to get booking.

We love that there are so many strong girls getting into lifting, and we’re excited about holding the Strong Girls Club at Sleven!

SPECIALISTS BEWARE: Sleven testing week is back! In June, you were put to the task with five devilishly difficult WODs during our summer Testing Week. As a training methodology, CrossFit develops your general physical preparedness. As such, each WOD has been devised to expose your weaknesses. We are going to test pretty much everything: both Olympic Lifts, squat and deadlift, some Open-style CrossFit, gymnastics, and plenty of metabolic conditioning.

All the WODs have been developed so that you can perform them in class in two heats if needed. Just like in The Open, you will be judged and cheered on by your fellow athletes. We will not be doing any strength or skills as we want you to focus on the WODs at hand. All WODs are scalable and we will be giving you plenty of options to make each WOD appropriate to your level.

We want everyone to have fun with these workouts. Please take them seriously but remember why we train and why we love CrossFit! If you do not do as well as you'd like, look at it as an opportunity to improve and attack those weaknesses head on! You will have the opportunity to crush them again in 2020.

SLEVEN XMAS Extravaganza



Next weekend we are celebrating Christmas, SLEVEN STYLE, with our very own 12 Days of Christmas WOD. Before we head out to the Christmas Party, we have devised a WOD that runs in the same way as the song "12 Days of Christmas".

Our resident intern, Emma, sent out emails today notifying you of who your Secret Santa is. Please check your inbox and junk just in case! If you are not sure who your person is or what present they would like, feel free to ask a coach. Please bring it wrapped and labelled and TRY TO KEEP IT A SECRET!! If you cannot find the email please let us know and we will check what email address we used.

Like the song the "12 Days of Christmas", complete each exercise in ascending order then work back down to 1, adding one exercise per round. Like this: 1; 2-1; 3-2-1; 4-3-2-1; etc – for a total of 364 reps.

Best of all, this Workshop is only £5, of which £2 is going towards breast cancer research. Come on down to the gym, get swole & flexy and do it all for a good cause!

Please feel free to bring non-members, this is an event open to the public!

SLEVEN XMAS Extravaganza



There are now over 60 people attending the SLEVEN XMAS EXTRAVAGANZA! We have booked out the Old Queen's Head in Islington and have prepared a day chock full of activities. If you've been on the fence about coming, EVERYONE is going to be there so make sure you don't get FOMO and book!

Don't forget that the deadline to purchase your tickets is 30 November. We can bill you via Wodify after the 30th if you would like to wait until after pay day. Battle for Middle Ground



Last weekend, we had four of our own compete at Battle for Middle Ground, one of the biggest fitness competitions in the UK. The standard was unbelievably high, in the Elite division, our team went toe-to-toe with athletes like Mitch Adams, who has competed at regionals five times!



Liftin' Viggarously, comprising Coach Loz and Chris Viggars, is the first team Sleven has ever sent to an Elite division in a competition. The pair made us extremely proud and had some special moments. In the "Worm Fran", they produced a masterclass of synchro chest-to-bar pull-ups, while other teams were having a domestic!

The pair also did great in "Cluster Assault" a combination of a two rep max cluster in part A followed by everyone's favourite, air bike and double-unders in part B! The pair managed a combined 165 kg between them in part A, followed by a blistering 6th place finish in part B, their best placing of the weekend!



Jamie Brunsdon and Sam Woodhead, AKA Disobedient Schoolgirls, took part in a competitive RX division where the calibre of athletes was not far off the Elites. The two finished a very respectable 15th and is a fantastic result considering they've worked very little as a duo.

The pair truly turned on the style in the "Devil's Row", a WOD consisting of devil's press and rowing. Jamie showed incredible speed on her devil's press, so much so that when we saw the video of her performing the movement, we thought it was sped up! Sam then took the reins on the row and pulled our team to a 4th place finish, the Schoolgirls' highest placing for the weekend.

BFMG wraps up Sleven's 2019 competition season and we're incredibly excited about what 2020 will bring!

SLEVEN STRENGTH SPECIAL



This week, we're handing over our Strength classes to the experts! Last night, Sarah Hilton and Richard Munro, two of London's most experienced weightlifting coaches, took the class through the snatch. Beginning with snatch-specific mobility work and warm-up drills, before Sarah broke the lift down into its individual elements. The class ended with an opportunity to put all of this into practice and max out, with Abdoul, James and Susie taking full advantage and making PB lifts!

Tomorrow evening, Sarah and Richard will be running a similar class focused on the clean & jerk.

SLEVEN XMAS Extravaganza



Stop what you're doing right now and block out 14th OF DECEMBER on your calendar! Sleven is hosting its first independent Xmas party and boy, is it going to be fantastic!

We have booked out the Old Queen's Head in Islington and have prepared a day chock full of activities for you. The day will start at the gym for the Sleven 12 Days of Xmas WOD. If you participated in it last year, you'll remember it was a doozy!

Once you have returned home, freshened up and donned your favourite festive frock, we have reserved the Clubroom at our venue for an exclusive private Christmas lunch. The Clubroom is cosy yet spacious with our own private bar and host. Upon arrival, you will make your way to the bar for a complimentary welcome drink to get the day started. Lunch will be served as a three course meal served family style with sharing platters for each table. This way of eating is perfect to enjoy with your SLEVEN family! Each table will also be waiting for you with both red and white wine.
 



Once we're done with lunch, we have reserved the Play Room upstairs. If you're bored of talking about CrossFit, there are a bunch of activities to get you back in the mood including karaoke, retro arcade games, foosball, and twister! The drinks will flow via our own private host and refrigerator.

After the success of last year's Secret Santa, we're going to carry on the tradition again this year. Our resident intern, Emma Wilcock, will be taking care of all the details closer to the time.

You can start reserving your place NOW either by emailing us or by chatting to us at the gym. If you have any special dietary requirments, please let us know in advance. The cost per person is £37.50 and we will take payment through Shopify at the gym or if you prefer, invoice you via Wodify. The deadline to sign up is 30th November. Remember, this will include a welcome drink, a three course meal including wine for the table and all the activities in the evening!
